So for you US readers that are wondering ‘ wtf ‘ I have a rouge, blanc, and blue C tattooed on the bottom of my feet when it comes to being loyal to my NHL Hockey team ! SO what, my team hasn’t Won a Championship Stanley Cup in decades, my beloved ‘ Blue Nation NHL ‘ Maple Leafs hockey Club team ‘ has won in my lifetime and will again win my undying support…. and we will see my Vancouver Canuck brethren.

What I am really saying is I was stamped with a BLUE MAPLE LEAF on my heart. Proud to support my team since an early age, as to always my family, a company of friends, my country and most of the time ‘ the Liberal Party of Canada ‘ .

I’m writing today after game 6 in Boston, a loss to Vancouver 5-2 and a few personal observations, since the news world is filling air-time with segments before and after of fans watching players of both teams spin stories and trade quips and sound-bites. My personal favorite spin is Boston media only airing the opening half of Roberto Loungo’s comments about his opponent Tim Thomas, then explained by Canada, HNIC hockey God ‘ Don ‘ Grapes ‘ Cherry. This truly is a totally homer series and after 82 games and a President’s Cup, the Vancouver Canucks have earned the right to stage the final Championship, game 7 on home ice in front of a home crowd of faithful but nervous, and most likely drunken, fickle fans.

What the world saw during the Winter Olympics will be what I hope to see from these faithful, but what I expect is some wanna-be soccer hooligan-ship from the losing side. Hockey is Not a gentle sport people, you of recent age will not be interested in the history of rival teams which runs as deep as tribal wars based on epic series of battles. My own personal feeling at this time is that the Boston Bruins squad has weathered and avenged a tribal beating of the Montreal Canadien’s and has a veteran, battle tested, older group of players that have something to prove to the hockey world.

My assessment is a cynical view of sports, we spectators have no say during a game, we are not on the ice effect the score or the outcome of a games result. Yea fans in the building are a seventh man, providing energy and to rally the players on the ice, clap, cheer, clown at any opportunity for the cameras and each other. In the ‘ Air Canada Center ‘ our regular season games are a lame, corporate affair to be seen in proper attire completely without emotions so I do envy those with the money to pay the scalper’s prices to enter the building in Vancouver for this game 7.

As to prediction, sure there will be a winner and the players will decide that … I only have to go back a few days to NBA Finals where hoops fans and the basketball world all but handed the Championship trophy to the ‘ Maimi Heat ‘ when Lebron ‘ king ‘ James left his hometown to sign along with another, in his own mind, ‘ superstar NOT ‘ former Toronto Raptors captain Chris Bosh to join Dwayne Wade and begin the new Dynasty. Note to the Miami Herald and those vendors with the Championship shirts, hats and other collectibles with ‘ Miami Heat 2011 NBA Champions ‘ nice try, there cya next year kinda forgot about that group of other older, veteran, professional basketball warriors led by Jason Kidd, and the great Dirk N. wish I was Mark Cuban the next morning.

So I will not say Canuck’s at home in seven, I’d like to see Lord Stanley’s Cup back in Canada. Last change, home ice, a young rookie maybe ‘ Cody Hodson ‘ playing a few shifts maybe the stuff of legendary game summary action to be immortalized by HNIC editing and post commentary by poet/host Ron Mclean and Grapes kissing someone for an overtime winner.

There you go, I say it goes OT, tied third period if the Canuck’s diving team appears with the’ Reboungo ‘ in net showing up in the first period, winner goes to the team that scores first goal. I hope Kessler scores it, takes home MVP playoffs Conn Smythe. I’m hearing footsteps and the pressure on the BC squad is overwhelming this freshly proclaimed ” Canada’s Team ‘ and NOT so ‘ Tim Thomas ‘ as he has been the better of the three goalies, Claude Julian keeps his coaches job if he benches ‘ former Leafs Defenceman Tomas Kabrele for being a showboat, puck-hog the most un-Bruin like player on the team so I will cheer for the Canucks with my heart and my voice as it lasts during this game, will enjoy the festivities regardless of outcome in a respectful way…. but I do fear a BOSTON upset !

Great White North has plenty of heart

Northern Hospitality:

Where I was born and raised in Espanola, Ontario it was considered unlawful to pass a stranded motorist on the side of the highway.

To say it was normal for someone from those parts to stop whenever they saw someone in the cold and in need of a quick check or ride to wherever, this is the way we in Northern Ontario are and I’m happy to say still are.

So to see the news in the States commenting on the actions of those outside of Sarnia who in the dead of a brutal winter’s storm, neighbors who went out into the night on snowmobiles to check on stranded motorists that they knew would be out there in the dark cold without enough fuel, food or winter gear.

Now, whenever people start to address what is all wrong with us as a society remember Gander, Newfoundland during 911, and what happened to that flight of soldiers that crashed and their generosity throughout history from ship wrecks, to plane crashes we in Canada should shout out it’s not us but those others that are not Canadian to show what is the right thing to do when we see people in trouble.

I say just get off the couch and do it, Do not wait for the governments of the day to get mobilized, it will be too late, it really is just up to each to individually do something, without asking permission but rather to go out there and do something for those in trouble, it’s what I learned from my years up North, it’s truly the Canadian way.

So in the aftermath of the news the Madoff’s eldest son hanged himself in his NY co-op, we should stop and again revist these three Fraudesters that have caused so many hardships and other deaths of their investors. This is no longer investors beware, this is more in the line of ‘ WTF were you thinking you greedy shites, maybe of all three the kid Madoff had the most and the lest heart as the reports say he was going to lose a law suit which would leave him bankrupted, no jail but without his monies, he ended his life or his life was ended!

I do not equate surviving in the prison system for the likes of Madoff, Jones to be that tough for old white guys in the North American Federal Prison System, three squares and a cot with personal guards to ensure they klive for a while does not release these shites from the public’s anger.

Heartless of me you think, speaking of our local shite Weizhen Tang who appeared in court last week to set a date for trail in Feburary 2011, I will follow this proceedings and there will be much more to report on this case as it wiggles through the court system in plain sight of the Chinese media and the few from mainstream that still has a interest and budget!

WARD 20 Update: Kensington Manor War

It seems that the first day of the new ROB FORD administation begins with a opening salva from my friend Adam Vaughn through the City Clerk’s office to the Toronto Housing Corporation represonable for managing the Seniors resident of 34 Oxford, Kensington Manor in Kensington Market.

So as I proceed with my follow up to the Toronto City Ombudsman Office, I’m going to recap from ‘ fighting the army, fighting the instutitional vote’, from the 2010 City elections were I worked against the incumbent councilman Adam Vaughn and his staff of Wally’s ( brother of Beaver ) and his army of Eddies. BTW we gathered 26% of the Ward, 3,800 votes vs 25,000 for Adam’s left side in Ward 20.

Now as Don Cherry was the entertainment for the local media, Rob and his hand-picked team went about the business of getting some of his campaign pledges accomplished, our councillman Adam Vaughn decided that he would call the city clerk’s office to pressure the home office of TCHC, tenant service co-ordinator, Karen Philphs, and cc’d the supt of ‘ Kensington Manor ‘ to make sure that I would not be able to keep my key to my mother’s apt in this building, threatening to evict a 78 year old Chinese senior and take away the housing subsidy to a widow and surviving stroke recovery victim. letter was dated December 6th my birthday.

I guess that was a bit of amusement back at City Hall in the office of Adam and his pack of faithful staffers guranteed another 4 years of employment but no chair on any of the standing committees of which he belonged to under his previous WARD dad ” Miller “.

GRAPES, Gripes, and the Gip ‘ROB FORD’

Had to jump on a few threads earlier and all I see are people whining about ‘ GRAPES ‘ aka DON CHERRY.

Some councilwoman I never hardly see was on CFTO and on the second day on this admin she was stating that Grapes ranting about ‘Pinko’s ‘ in his custom Pink Suit, saying my two most favorite overused words ‘inappropriate’ and ‘ unacceptable’. All this in the most inner sanctams of power, in the council of Toronto’s City Hall, we we have had such profound statesmen like ‘ Mel Lastman ” of nooobody fame and dignity indeed !

Now as the chains move from lame duck to the new Sheriff, Mayor Ford pulls a Gretzky and has Grapes field the media scum while he chuckles and picks away at the moderate, reasonable members from the firm left cabal, speaking here of Gord Perks, Adam Vaughn’s must trusted ally. I’m predicting Adam gets Stu-gots from Rob, Doug and the hard right, chuckles really if you really think about it the council is humming about pinko’s, the old guard Miller-ites and thier army of supporters are all up in fine form being gib and cracking wise about this speech which invokes Mackenzie King. Again, who really cares, it’s like ” do you politicos really watch the news in the rest of the city, let alone the country and the world ?

People in Haiti are up in revolt over the corrupted election results. There are people dying from lack of clean water and no shelter dispite all the money the world pledged, maybe that’s why there is a dispute over who gets to handle this massive relief effect from the rest of the free world.

Greece, Ireland and the US economies blow chunks for average working family, Somilian pirates, Nigerian scammers and raiders, Mexican psycho drug king-pins and the US arms trade, Korean whack jobs and your ordinary kids gone made make the headlines each day as citizen journalist post videos, blogs and boards on anything the happens hourly, welcome to ‘the Brave New World ‘.

So keep calling Rob Ford, Don Cherry names and focus on these utterings and trifles as we say on the block cause they really do not get it …. There is a new adult in charge and they hate the whiners, will play them like the children they mostly are because the business of being in charge is a tough assignment, where you need to MAN UP to stay in charge so it’s a new era and the circus is outside the tent … the power is in the WORK that must be addressed and TIME is of extreme importance, businesses are suffering because the average working man does not have money, he his a long, bleek, cold winter ahead and believe me Grapes, and the Gip are on the side of the working man, his family and the Toronto Maple Leafs…..

Habs fans and hard-core pinkos can start screaming again now !

China’s Prodigal Sons

This is my grandfathers head tax certificate that shows the amount and date that he paid the tariff/tax.

I used to be way more angry, never really knew why, but this was a starting point to really understand the why.

Too many people have made this a political issue.

Since the early 90’s when many new immigrants from Hong Kong decided that there must be a redress of this terrible part in Canada’s history.

And this is were my anger level really start to peak.

Let’s backtrack a little bit here, since my Grandfather’s grandfather was the first of our family to come to Canada from China in the 1880’s.

That makes me the fifth generation to call myself a Canadian Chinese, rather that a china-man from China in Canada, or a Chinese Canadian.

It’s my personal belief as well as some of my closest friends that consider without the fact that our fore-bearer came to this country from China looking for work, and a better future than whence they came. This really means thankfully they did or my life may have in knee deep in water buffalo shite in some rice paddy in Canton.

So let’s dive into this issue now as I am planning to produce my own story in a documentary.

I think I’ll call it ” HEADTAX REDRESS, RE-MIX, REPONSCE ”

I originally had thought to write a propasal to to the CHRP, Canadain Historical, Repreations Program, which is in Ministry of Culture .

This was the agency that recieved 25 million when this current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper apolagizsed to the Canadain Chinese that survived and those that proported top represent thier cause.

This was early March when I heard that there was a thrid and final round of proposals to be submmitted to CHRP for funding for various projects.

The first round of dispersments went and rightly so to the surviving Head Tax payers and theirs spouses, $ 20,000.

The second round went to institutions such as the Chinese Canadian Cultural Centre and these grants were in the $ 500,000 - 2,000,000 million range.

Leaving the final round for proposals by all others, my intent was to produce a documentry. I was told that I had a ceiling of $75,000 but the best was to go for a one-time grant of $ 50,000.

Good numbers if you are an independant film-maker looking for funding, the bad news was that OMNI got $ 600,000 for a three part documentary they called ‘ REDRESS Re-MIX ‘ which has been broadcasted.

I intend to produce my own and they can keep thier ‘ 50,000 ‘.

FAITH vs Organized Religion in the media

Its a question of beliefs and personal faith.

Over this past weekend, my family enjoyed watching the 108th running of the Santa Claus parade in Toronto. It is one of the oldest in North America and is very popular. One of the few instances where we celebrate Christmas before the Americans enjoy their Thanksgivings.

Personally, I try and keep my beliefs private but in this case there is a question of the role of the media in all of this. It use to be a special time when top rated television series would always have a Christmas themed episode in time for family values during these upcoming weeks. Hallmark was always produced the best programming and are a throwback to old iconic North American values.

So, early prime time scheduling would program re runs some of my favorite programs such as Jag, NCIS, ER, all would provide great viewing for all.

Then there is reality, in Canada today we have an issue before the BC Supreme Court on the question of Polygamy and whether that violates our constitution under freedom of religion.

CNN re-ran a expose originally aired in 2008 called ‘Escape from Jonestown’ by Soledad O’brien. It truly is a gruesome program. This after 30 years still is one of the most disturbing pieces ever to air.

A sitting US Congressman Leo Ryan from California was assassinated along with NBC news reporter Don Harris, his cameraman Bob Brown and photographer Greg Robinson were murdered. There is a clip were the camera captures a gunman shooting point blank his victim with a rifle before he turns his weapon on the NBC cameraman and the image turns to snow!

Of course the 900 other bodies, 303 of which were children found by Ghana authorities in Jonestown are really horrific, I do remember the pictures published in Life back then in 1978 were really disturbing.

I truly think that most of these victims were mostly homeless, unknown to the world and as many as 400 of these bodies were transported back to United States to be buried in a common mass grave in Oakland.

This in the name of belief, and a crazed religious leader !

Flashing, forward to another religious leader, this guy in my humble opinion is another whack job totally out of touch with the modern world we all share.

Among many chances to restore faith in the Catholic Church, with the scandals of pedophiles in too many countries to name, there is no leadership.

The total lack of understanding of the modern age, where many believers use contraceptives and condoms which does Not make a bad Cathholic.

He said recently the use of condoms could reduce the risk of HIV infection, therefore there is exception such as for a male prostitute, in a series of interviews given to a German journalist.

The man in question is of course Pope Benedict XVI.

This is the difference between our world and the world of the true believer.

I can call the Pope a whack job. I am allowed ….

I am not going to be stoned … too bad

I should compare this man to the previous Pope who I think was a great man, funny I mean it’s a messed up time when I praise a Polish Pope, berate an Italian Pope … well usually I just blame the Irish for the ills of the planet but they are in the media this week as we bail out the ‘ Celtic Tiger’ so I’m giving them a pass for the rest of the year !

PAT BURNS 1952-2010 RIP Coach

PAT BURNS 1952-2010

It was always very clear to me that this was a real man.

Nevermind the storied career that Pat Burns had in the NHL, this was a sad end.

Father, husband, ex-cop, 3 time coach of the year with the Habs, Leafs and Bruins and an example of one of the best that this country could produce!

Going back to the early nineties, I was fortunate to be involved in the PRO Sports business, mainly in apparell then memorbilia a couple blocks from Maple Leafs Gardens.

This was the time of rebirth of an orginal six franchise that transformed Toronto, thinking of the 92, 93 World Series Champion Blue Jays and the 92-93 Maple Leafs under Pat Burns made this city hum with excitment.

Reading what is been wrote about what others thought about the game 7 loss against Wayne Gretzky that denied our Leafs a chance to play Patrick Roy and the Habs is something that we all cherish alone with what if’s !

So here we are heading into a weekend with our Leafs in Montreal tonight for a game in the forum against those memories, with the Argos vs Alouettes Sunday. .. Could they scripted this any better ?

I for one will be watching and remembering a man that I met once in 92.

At the bar called PM Toronto, across Church street from Maple Leafs Gardens is where all the players and staff from the Gardens hooked up. It was where Doug Gilmour met and eventually married former usherette Amy.

Anyhow, he was having a drinking a the bar alone and I walked up to him started bubbling about whatever to make a impression. He was a bear of a man, ex-Montrealer cop, coach and very approachable who gave me an interview through channels …. don’t rememeber the theme of the interview, don’t remember the antics, cannot recall the outcome except that I remember walking up to meet this man and I shall remember him as such, a real man’s man.

So for all of us Canadains, let’s not dwell on the fact that those in the Hockey Hall of Fame blew it when they could have ushered Pat Burns into the Hall when he was alive, after surviving Colon cancer, cancer of the liver, and then figuring Lung cancer would kill him … he again showed me what it is like to be a man… rip Coach, say hi to my da if you would, I lost him in 92 when he was also 58 and maybe this weekend when we all watch the games we can all celebrate in your life and remember what if !

Nobel Peace Prize Li Xiaobo

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo

Well now, this is a year after Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the Nobel to President Barak Obama.

I guess I may have to start with my own personal opinion about this development in the global chess game. As this has offended the Chinese reigme into pressing ambassadors from Russia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Morocco, and Iraq to decline invites to Olso for the awarding of this prize to Liu Xiaobo’s family.

Lui, a Chinese dissident, advocate for political reform is serving a 11 year sentence for subversion. His conviction is based on the fact that he co-authored an appeal calling for reforms to China’s one-party political system. His wife is also under house arrest and you would think that they will never be granted exit visas to collect this award.

So with these facts, I believe that again the Europeans have made a new chess player for the worlds media to infuriate China’s leaders.

Is this meant to cause internal strife in order to slow down China’s rapid growth and domination in th world’s new economy ?

Or is this more distractions from the problems that have been plaguing the world since the end of WWII ?

I say, it was a calculated attempt to detour the afterglow of the Beijing Olympics and too embarass the government in China in the eyes of the world.

I’d also say that for me it’s a great new focal point to start a new dialouge with China for the average man, woman, child outside of that country. I hope that there is a teaching moment here for the rest of the world who for so long have had others like the Dali Lama leading the same tired refrains about the history of China and it’s record of human rights.

Maybe for us Canadians we should repeal the Indian Act, talk about the Chinese Head Tax and bring our troops home from Afghanstan before we enter into this new era where we all bark at China for show, for politics, for the world’s fleeting opinion.

For the rest of the world how about speaking out about Isreal and the Palastine camps in GAZA, the genicide in Dafur, and the crazy bad conditions in Haiti …
